No Stone Unturned review – a scrupulous documentary

This documentary unsparingly recounts the 1994 murders of six men and wounded of five others at O’Toole’s Bar in County Down. But to illustrate how difficult it is to find the answers that would lead to some form of justice, two of the journalists who supplied material for the film were arrested by the Police Service of Northern Ireland in what was described as a ‘despicable attack on press freedom’. The two journalists, Trevor Birney and Berry McCaffrey, and Fine Point Films received a six-figure payout from PSNI in 2020 and unreserved apology.

This incident was one of the inspirations behind ‘What Goes Around’.

Extract from the book.

Hardly a head turned as the door of the bar swung open and two strangers entered. Most eyes were fixed on the television that was spewing out the hysterics of a final furlong. McGrady was in a corner talking to a taller man of around his own age. Hughie Maguire, an old man, short and rotund, moved away from the bar counter with a glass in his hand and looked out towards the open door. Instinctive bravery made him shuffle sideways to put himself between the man who was talking to Anthony McGrady and the AK-47 which was pointing in his direction.
